I received my e-Christmas card from my employers at County Hall. It shows a beach and a sunset. I also receieved my school e Christmas -card and it depicts a pair of hands holding a small pile of earth within which is growing a seedling.
And I wondered when the State Religion of this country had become Buddhism?

It's funny this, as an athiest I guess most people would think that I would welcome the new religous lite secular feel to Christmas. However, there is something terribly empty about it and it seems to me because it is part of the stripping away of what is distinctive in being British in the hope that we won't offend those who are not.
But without that we become just creatures of the present with no sense of being connected to our history and history is as much to do with traditions and song as it is of great battles and even great acts like the repeal of slavery.
Sorry, this probably reads as quite pretentious and I'm not sure I nailed what I wanted to say,

At least the depiction is something relevant to society, which makes a change.
Actually, and again as an athiest this might sound odd, but the Christmas Story is a thing of exquisite beauty and it's message of love seems relevant today.

If you lift out the elements from the Christmas story you describe, I cannot but agree with you.
I personally love traditional cards but there's obviously a market out there for the non-traditional versions. Not sure it's got anything to do with the "stripping away of what is distinctive in being British.." It's happening across the world.

good to hear from you again. There clearly is a market for thse more secular cards but the one's I received were from corporate organisations and I think there is a sense there of not pushing the Christmas message for all sorts of hand wringing reasons....
Anyway, it's not just Biblical scenes that I miss but ones with snow, robins, roaring fires the sorts of things that I picture when I picture Christmas.

I have been looking for christmas cards on the net and loads of them are depicting sunsets and such, luckily I found one site that still did the traditional snow and christmas tree stuff.
